Spirulina used to be classified as an algae, but now it has been re-classified as an cyano bacteria in the genus Arthrospira. It is still sold under the name spirulina, but it is typically A. platensis or A. maxima that is in the bags you buy.

It doesn't make a huge difference; it is still a high protein food supplement and in fact, it is actually also used for health products for humans.

Here on Aquainfo it is all about fish and you can purchase flake foods where there is added a high percentage of spirulina. It is usually foods for fish that requires vegetable food but iti is also an excellent supplement for all other fish. You can also buy spirulina as a powder and that you can mix in with other ingredients if you experiment with homemade frozen foods.

Apart from the protein content, spirulina also contains beta-caroten, which is a color enhancer, and several other vitamins. It can be used regularly for both mbunas and catfish, but for catfish it is better primarily to use tablet form.
